The Spirit Gives Us Authority; The Blood of Jesus Gives Us Covering

Hi Daughter,

The truth about physical self-defense when using a defense weapon is that the fight doesn't always end once the immediate threat is over.

Many people overlook a crucial fact: simply claiming self-defense doesn’t automatically protect you from criminal charges or civil lawsuits. In self-defense, even if your actions are justified, you may still need to defend yourself in court. That’s why having both a carry permit and self-defense insurance is crucial. They keep you legally protected while offering financial security if you ever need to defend yourself. Together, they give you confidence and peace of mind after you take action to defend yourself.

Similarly, our spiritual lives also need protection and covering. Just as permits and insurance safeguard us physically, the Holy Spirit functions as our permit, and the Blood of Jesus serves as our insurance in the spiritual realm. Let’s explore this together.

What’s the Difference Between a Permit and Self-Defense Insurance?

  • Carry Permit: This is a government-issued document that legally authorizes you to carry a firearm in public—either openly or concealed—according to your state’s laws.

  • Self-Defense Insurance: A private membership or service you pay for that covers legal and financial expenses if you ever use a weapon in self-defense. Most programs include:

    • Legal defense fees

    • Civil lawsuits

    • Bail bonds

    • Firearm replacement

    • Counseling support (in some cases) and more…

Why Both a Permit and Insurance are Beneficial

Even if you act to protect yourself or others, your actions can still be investigated, questioned, or prosecuted. Law enforcement, prosecutors, or even the attacker’s family could pursue criminal or civil cases against you. The challenge is to prove your actions were justified. That’s where preparation and protection come into play:

  • A Carry Permit shows that you are trained, responsible, and law-abiding—often influencing how law enforcement and courts perceive your intent.

  • Self-Defense Insurance helps protect you from financial disaster when defending yourself. It offers access to experienced attorneys, legal resources, and funds that could otherwise cost $10,000 to $100,000—or more.

The Biblical Comparison

The Bible reminds us that defense is both physical and spiritual. Just as earthly systems offer cover, God has provided divine protection.

The Holy Spirit as Our Permit

A permit shows that you have the authority to carry your weapon. Similarly, the Holy Spirit authorizes and empowers believers to walk in power.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

-Acts 1:8

  • Background Check Cleared: In the natural, permits require a background check. Spiritually, the Holy Spirit clears our record when we accept Christ, giving us a new identity as children of God (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  • No Disqualifications: Although earthly laws may disqualify some from obtaining a carry permit, the Spirit transforms and qualifies us through grace (Titus 3:5-6).

  • Authority Granted: Just as a permit gives legal authority to carry, the Spirit grants divine authority to live boldly and resist the enemy (Luke 10:19).

  • Ongoing Renewal: A permit must be renewed. Similarly, walking in the Spirit requires daily surrender and obedience (Galatians 5:16).

The Blood of Jesus as Our Insurance

Insurance covers the costs resulting from a self-defense incident. Spiritually, the blood of Jesus covers our debts and sins, saving us from judgment.

“Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!”

-Romans 5:9

The blood of Jesus is our ultimate protection against every accusation from the enemy (Revelation 12:10–11). Just as insurance offers legal defense in difficult times, the blood of Jesus provides us with Jesus Himself as our Advocate—standing before the Father on our behalf (Romans 8:34). And just as insurance brings peace of mind amid life’s uncertainties, the blood of Jesus assures us of eternal security and victory, regardless of what we face.

Limitations of Self-Defense Insurance

It’s important to note that not all insurance programs are the same. Some include exclusions or vague policies designed to limit payouts. Always read contracts carefully and ask questions so you know exactly what’s covered.

It's important to know that even if earthly programs fail us, Jesus's blood never does. His protection is perfect and eternal.

Practical Note: Some states require permits for less-lethal tools like pepper spray or tasers, while others may not require permits at all. Additionally, permits might not be valid across state lines –so always verify reciprocity laws before traveling.
